Distance Assistance
If you are taking courses through UND, our goal is to maintain the same level of access to services and resources that you would receive if you were on campus.
Distance borrowers live outside the Grand Forks/East Grand Forks Zip Code area (58201, 58202, 58203, or 56721) and do not come to campus regularly.
Off-Campus Access
To access our resources from off campus, start on our homepage to navigate to databases, articles, or other resources. You will be prompted to login with your UND username (usually firstname.lastname) and password.
Note: You are unable to use a VPN while accessing resources through the library.
Interlibrary Loan
Distance students, faculty, and staff can use our Interlibrary Loan service to get books mailed to them. We will contact you with any information or questions via your UND email account, so be sure to check your account often. Keep your Campus Connection contact information updated whenever your address or phone number changes, so we can send you the materials you're requesting in a timely manner.
Students
Enrollment Requirements
Students must be enrolled in at least 1 credit to access our resources and services. If you are working on an independent study, thesis, or dissertation, you'll need to register for continuing enrollment credit to retain library access.
Proctoring
The library does not offer proctoring services, and does not have reservable library spaces for taking tests.
Subject Librarians
We are happy to help you with your research, so don't hesitate to contact your subject librarian. When you are off campus, it can be even more important for you to develop a good working relationship with your subject librarian for research help.
Research Guides
Find your subject's research guide to find the best library resources for your research.
Tutorials
Tutorials can help you learn about our resources and the research process in order to succeed in your coursework and your career.
Faculty
We're here to support your teaching and research needs!
Subject Librarians
Contact your subject librarians for library research instruction, research assistance, or appointments with students (e.g., through Starfish). Provide your class syllabi to your subject librarians to help them with collection development and instruction.
Research Guides
Help your students find our resources, such as showing them our information on Research Skills, pointing them to the useful information in the student section of this page, or encouraging them to contact their subject librarian. Additionally, provide links to our subject-area research guides in Blackboard and include your subject librarian's contact information on your syllabus to give students an easy way to access help any time of day.
Databases
Check out our Databases A-Z list or link directly to the subject-specific databases your subject librarian has deemed the most likely to help you and your students.
Permalinks
Use proxied permalinks (permanent links) to access licensed journal articles within emails or in Blackboard. These links ensure that your students will be able to access the resource on or off campus and provide us with statistical counts of material usage.
Instruction and Tutorials
We conduct research skills instruction using hybrid, asynchronous, or solely online methods. Ask your subject librarian about specific tutorials for your subject. Have one that you'd like to see that we don't have yet? Contact your subject librarian and ask them about creating something for a specific course or assignment.
Course Resources
Work with the UND Bookstore to create courses packs of unlicensed library content. This helps students obtain the materials more quickly instead of requiring an entire class to request and wait to receive Interlibrary Loan materials. Explore open educational resources (OERs) support at UND.
